An article which has been flying around the asian communities:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704111504576059713528698754.html
and a lecture given to plebes at West Point:

plus, from the same lecturer above, why Yale sucks:

I'd already read the asian mothers but these other two look very interesting. I only had time to read a few paragraphs before I realized they were enormous but I'll read them asap.
ReplyDeletegreat articles. I wish the asian article took her piece a step further though.
ReplyDeleteShe concludes asian mothers are successful because their kids win awards, get great grades, and go to ivy league schools. However, she doesn't go into what happens next, when the kids leave her realm. The asian stereotype continues with lack of creativity, bad social skills, and weak independence as adults. In other words, childhood excellence doesn't translate into adult success.
I wish the author would have commented on these stereotypes as well, for if they are at all true in reality, it almost goes to show her parenting style may be flawed after all.
^ Too bad they don't force them to practice driving for 3 hours a day
ReplyDelete1. Today's issue had this response article:

Make sure you read the Comments, apparently 80% of the responders need to have "humor" explained to them
2.plebe lecture: this is a beautiful essay. I whole heartedly agree with it. I have tried to capture in the Republican Club that part of the essay that referred to friendship as a trusted place where to talk was to "think out loud". I'm sorry it is to be lost. To see how it has been lost is a very valuable lesson in the the realities of the first part of the essay
3. his experience is the same as mine, and I would encourage you to take his fears to heart. After all the Republicans of our club fail to get into HYP, I always try to help them see that failure is libertating. To have tried your best and failed let's you get up after your cry and ask what you should do now, and the slate is blank. That is liberty. Fear success, not failure
excellent article. now, how can Western thought be changed? its apparent that chinese children who have undergone this "harsh" childhood do not regret it, and in fact are made better by it. They do not seem to need counseling or medication to function. However, western children who have been brought up in the western style do need counseling and medication in some cases. I am from an Irish family, and even though my parents are more lax than the Chinese family in the article, I have a much stricter life than most of my friends. I feel that this Chinese system should be implemented in the Western world, the only question is: how?
ReplyDeleteI really liked those Yale/ West Point lectures.
